Jack Born, Owner

Business owner, networker and volunteer, Jack Born came to Canada at the age of six from Holland. As a young adult, he completed a 2-year design program at MacEwan University, then returned to Holland for an additional 5 years of print design studies at Academie Minerva from some of the world’s best. His international experiences include nine months of working as a graphic designer in Amsterdam plus a three-month employment in New York City at one of North America's most influential graphic design and advertising companies at the time, Tibor Kalman’s M&Co.

From all this it's clear that Jack's first love is, and will always be, print design. He loves the challenge that print design offers. The greater the challenge, the more he likes it. Finding a unique solution to a client's problem — Jack is in his element. By asking the right questions, Jack can identify and showcase a unique set of qualities that'll help his clients get noticed. He'll go the extra mile for anyone (not just his clients) and enjoys extraordinary relationships with the rest of Edmonton's design and print community.

As an entrepreneur, he has fully committed to his industry and the daily operations of Design Quarry, its development and its growth. An avid learner, he keeps up by reading, networking, attending Pecha Kucha presentations, listening to TED Talks plus a variety of podcasts from various sources that interest him deeply, like AI, robotics and architecture in which he often displays a creative bent.

A committed networker, and wanting to give back to the business community, Jack has served many years on the board of Canada's Graphic Designer Association and more recently, the Edmonton Business Association, as well as board positions of various local networking groups. You'll also find him at a number of Edmonton business events each month.

When not pursuing his business interests, Jack can be found volunteering for various local events, like the MS Society's annual bike ride, Edmonton's Folk Music Festival and others. Or, he could be out snapping photos, canoeing or cycling in/near the city (he rides year round — yes, winter too). One of his favourite winter activities is speed skating and during the summer, he loves taking his kids back country hiking in the Rockies.

Sometime in the future, Jack has his sights set on exploring further afield. Spain is on the horizon. And beyond that looms a hike up Africa's tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro.

However, if you need any of Design Quarry's services, he'll likely be around and eager to help. You can contact Jack directly at 780.430.9693, or email info@designquarry.com
